At Forest Creek Animal Hospital, your pet’s dental health is very important to us. Just as with all members of your family, it is recommended that your pet have regular dental examinations and teeth cleanings. Studies have shown that 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have some form of periodontal disease by two years of age. Dental disease can result in bad breath, painful chewing and tooth loss. Bacteria associated with dental disease can enter the bloodstream and contribute to damage of the liver, kidneys and heart as well as conditions such as diabetes.

We routinely perform professional teeth cleanings under anesthesia to address these issues. Teeth are scaled to remove plaque and tartar buildup both on the crown of the tooth as well as below the gum line. Teeth are polished to provide a smooth surface which helps to reduce the accumulation of bacteria. Our veterinarians then provide a comprehensive oral examination to evaluate and probe each tooth to screen for periodontal disease. The entire mouth is evaluated for irritations, wounds, growths and foreign bodies such as bone shards or toy remnants. We will discuss any problems or concerns with you to formulate an appropriate treatment plan for your pet.
Our veterinarians are trained to diagnose and treat a multitude of problems and diseases such as:
  • Bad breath
  • Plaque / tartar accumulation
  • Gingivitis
  • Tooth decay / periodontal infection
  • Fractured / mobile teeth
  • Oral tumors
We offer a variety of diagnostic and treatment options which can typically be performed in conjunction with your pet’s teeth cleaning procedure. Some of these include:
  • Digital dental radiography to evaluate teeth of concern and screen for problems below the gum line
  • Biopsy and removal of oral tumors
  • Treatment of early periodontal disease with application of an intraoral antibiotic gel, Doxirobe.
  • Tooth extraction for fractured or severely diseased teeth
  • Application of OraVet barrier to reduce future plaque and tartar build up
Following the dental procedure, our staff will be happy to assist you in formulating a home care plan which will help to keep your pet’s teeth clean and healthy. We carry a variety of dental hygiene products that can be tailored to meet you and your pet’s needs. Ask about these today!
